How High Should a Laptop Stand Be? Free Calculator

The short answer

Raise your screen so the top of it is at eye level or slightly below, with the screen about an arm's length away. For many average-height people that means a lift of roughly 6 to 8 inches. Taller people often need more, so measure instead of guessing.

Calculate your lift

Take two measurements with a ruler or tape measure, then enter them below. No tape measure? An A4 sheet of paper is 29.7 cm (11.7 in) long.

How to measure

  1. Sit upright in your normal chair with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Measure from the desk surface up to the outer corner of your eye. If you are alone, hold a book flat against a wall at eye level and measure to it.
  3. Open your laptop on the desk and measure from the desk to the top edge of the screen.

What to do with your number

Pick a stand whose maximum height is at least your lift number, with a little spare room to fine-tune. If your number is large, read our guide to laptop stands for tall people. Add an external keyboard and mouse so your hands stay at a comfortable height.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 6 to 8 inch lift enough?

It is the typical figure many guides give for average-height users. Taller people often need more, which is why the calculator uses your own measurements.

Should the top of the screen be above or below eye level?

At eye level or slightly below. A screen above eye level makes you tilt your head back.

How far away should the screen be?

About an arm's length, roughly 20 to 30 inches (50 to 75 cm) from your eyes.

Do I need an external keyboard?

Yes. Raising the laptop raises its keyboard too, so use a separate keyboard and mouse at elbow height.
